Welcome to the Fifth Grade!
Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
Welcome to the new school year! We are excited to have your child in our fifth grade classroom. As you can see, there are many changes to Lincoln Elementary this year, including a new computer lab and new library materials. This computer lab was built using funds from the Enhancing Education through Technology Grant.
Lincoln has faced many challenges over the past ten years. However, the funds from this grant will help us overcome these challenges by implementing a new curriculum that integrates technology into subject areas. Lincoln qualified for this grant because of several factors:
- Title I funded school
- 40% of our 250 students are on free and reduced lunch
- High number of absences
- Test scores below state minimums in math and reading
The funds from this grant allowed our school to upgrade the computer lab to include thirty computers running Windows Vista plus a new computer for the instructor, five flatbed scanners, and three printers. We also purchased a projection system that will allow the instructor to demonstrate activities to students. These technological tools will become an integral part of our curriculum. These new tools are particularly important because the fifth grade class will be taking proficiency tests in reading, math, science, and social studies at the end of the school year. Through these enhancements to our lab, we aim to raise test scores and increase the attendance by fifty percent.
In order to introduce your student to the new computer lab, all thirty of our fifth graders will participate in Technology Day on September 30, 2010. This technology day will feature activities in nine content areas: art, language arts, math, music, health, physical education, science, social studies, and Spanish. The teachers of these content areas will conduct a forty-minute class in the computer lab. For more information on the planned activities, please see the attached schedule.
If you have any questions, please contact the office at (330) 672-7500.
Sincerely,
The Fifth Grade Teachers
